samenvatting: Every night, Bailey dreams about magical dresses: dresses made of crystals and rainbows, dresses made of flowers, dresses made of windows … Unfortunately, when Bailey's awake, no one wants to hear about these beautiful dreams. Quite the contrary. "You're a BOY!" Mother and Father tell Bailey. "You shouldn't be thinking about dresses at all." Then Bailey meets Laurel, an older girl who is touched and inspired by Bailey's imagination and courage. In friendship, the two of them begin making dresses together. And Bailey's dreams come true! Marcus Ewert gives us a gorgeous picture book and a modern fairy tale about becoming the person you feel you are inside. 10,000 Dresses will delight people of all ages.

samenvatting: From the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl's brain in a boy's body. She loved pink and dressing up as a mermaid and didn't feel like herself in boys' clothing. This confused her family, until they took her to a doctor who said that Jazz was transgender and that she was born that way.

A Critical Review of Assumptions About Gender Variant Children in Psychological Research  / Sarah A. O. Gray, Alice S. Carter, Heidi Levitt.

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health, 16 (2012) 1 (jan-mar), p. 4-30
bron: Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health jaargang: 16 (2012) 1 (jan-mar), p. 4-30
samenvatting: Research on gender variant children (including those who meet criteria for Gender Identity Disorder in Children) originated with the heterosexist goal of preventing gender and sexual minority identities in adulthood. When we re-examine what is known about these children outside of pathologizing assumptions, what do we know about promoting their mental health and adaptation? Taking a developmental psychopathology frame, we argue for a shift in research paradigms away from the study of (1) outcomes of sexuality and gender identity and (2) the child in isolation toward (1) outcomes of adjustment and well-being and (2) the child in contexts that affect adjustment. 'Deep down where the music plays' : How parents account for childhood gender variance  / Tey Meadow.

Sexualities, 14 (2011) 6 (dec), p. 725-747
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 14 (2011) 6 (dec), p. 725-747
samenvatting: Parents of gender variant children routinely negotiate their child's gender with social institutions, from schools to churches to neighborhood associations. These interactions require that parent develop narratives about why their particular child violates gender norms. In this paper, I argue that over the last century, there has been a proliferation within biomedicine, psychiatry and popular culture of the ways in which we can "know" gender; and as a result, ever more emotional work is required to account for the "self" that inhabits the gendered body. This analysis of the work parents of gender variant children do to explain their children to others demonstrates that these identities require a distinctly modern form of accounting. With that call to articulate the self comes an attendant proliferation of the ways in which gender can be regulated; yet, despite much sociological evidence that medicine, psychology and spirituality are often mechanisms for social control, they also provide ready tools for exploring, facilitating and embracing the multiplicity and plasticity of contemporary gender identities.

The Needs of Gender-Variant Children and Their Parents According to Health Professionals  / Elizabeth A. Riley ... [et al.].

International Journal of Transgenderism, 13 (2011) 2 (apr-jun), p. 54-63
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 13 (2011) 2 (apr-jun), p. 54-63
samenvatting: Children with gender variance and their parents struggle with negativity on a daily basis due to ignorance regarding their issues and needs. This study explored professionals' views of these issues and needs via a qualitative Internet survey. Responses were examined using content and thematic analysis. The dominant identified needs for gender-variant children according to the professionals were to feel accepted, acknowledged and respected. Parents' needs included emotional support and guidance, information, and access to competent, caring professionals. Implications of the study's findings were the need for professional training, funding for education and research, and efforts to reduce the social stigma associated with gender variance. The Transgender Child : A Handbook for Families and Professionals  /

Stephanie A. Brill and Rachel Pepper ; Foreword by Norman P. Spack.San Fransisco, CA: Cleis Press, 2008 - xvii, 252 p.
uitgave: San Fransisco, CA: Cleis Press, 2008 - xvii, 252 p.

samenvatting: This guidebook explores the challenges that thousands of families face every day raising their gender variant children. Through extensive research and interviews, as well as years of experience working in the field, the authors cover gender variance from birth through college. What do you do when your toddler daughter's first sentence is that she's a boy? What will happen when your preschool son insists on wearing a dress to school? Is this ever just a phase? How can you explain this to your neighbors and family? How can parents advocate for their children in elementary schools? What are the current laws on the rights of transgender children? What do doctors specializing in gender variant children recommend? What do the therapists say? What advice do other families who have trans kids have? What about hormone blockers and surgery? What issues should your college-bound trans child be thinking about when selecting a school? How can I best raise my gender variant or transgender child with love and compassion, even when I barely understand the issues ahead of us? And what is gender, anyway? These questions and more are answered in this book offering a deeper understanding of gender variant and transgender children and teens.
